In the majority of the industrial components we use, the raw material is in the form of a round bar. Which grade, what it's made of, dictates absolutely everything else: how it behaves under load, its resistance to wear or corrosion, and how easily it can be machined to size.
Bronze round bar is arguably one of the most prevalent raw materials in the manufacturing and engineering sector. It machines cleanly, offers corrosion resistance, wear resistance at long-term friction and stress, and is available in a variety of alloy grades suitable for any specific requirement. Procurement teams and engineers procuring material in the UAE need to identify what grade to order and the reason why it should be specified.
A bronze round bar is a solid cylinder of copper-based alloy manufactured or extruded into a circular shape and supplied in specified lengths. It is the main raw material for the machined parts - bearing, bushing, valve seats, sleeves, gears, etc.
The term 'bronze' in this context is used to refer to a family of copper-base alloys, and not to one specific material. Bars of different alloy compositions have radically different mechanical and chemical properties, hence, grade selection is the first and most critical stage of procurement.
The four grades commonly stocked in the UAE market cover different marine, industrial, and oil and gas requirements.
Probably the most widely adopted general-purpose bearing and bushing grade in engineering. The proportions of copper, tin, zinc, and lead result in a material that can be machined with ease, it can handle a fair pressure without showing much "leakiness", and it can cope with moderate loads wear-wise.
It is the common specification for plain bearings, pump bushings, valve parts, and other general mechanical components. It also performs reasonably well with water, oil, and weakly corrosive conditions.
It has higher tin content than RG5 and thus increased mechanical strength and improved corrosion resistance. It is more suitable for components subjected to heavier loads and/or more severe fluid conditions: hydraulic components, marine fittings, and pressure valve components.
RG7 is the one specified where operating conditions are more demanding. It is the one commonly available in stock at most bronze bar suppliers within the UAE.
It is a leaded bronze alloy, the percentage of lead content being considerably greater than that of RG5 or RG7. This gives it excellent self-lubricating properties, and hence it is the standard grade for heavily loaded plain bearings operating with limited lubrication.
Its only limitation is lower tensile strength in comparison to the lower-lead bronze grades. RG12 should be ordered for bearing and bushing applications.
Also called gunmetal, this is a leaded gunmetal alloy which contains copper, tin, zinc, and lead. It possesses high mechanical strength and is highly resistant to fresh water and sea water corrosion, and is good to machine.
LG2 is typically used for valve bodies, pump casings, marine fittings and other water contacting applications when it is important to retain strength at pressure as well as having good corrosion resistance.
The table below summarises the typical mechanical properties for the four main grades:
| Grade | Tensile Strength | Yield Strength | Hardness | Elongation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| RG5 | 270 MPa | 130 MPa | 70–90 | 13% |
| RG7 | 280 MPa | 150 MPa | 75–90 | 15% |
| RG12 | 220 MPa | 100 MPa | 60–75 | 12% |
| LG2 | 290 MPa | 140 MPa | 65–85 | 18% |
These values are characteristic of cast bar stock and are subject to changes with respect to heat treatment, size and the method of manufacture. Check against the mill test report of the particular supply.
No matter the grade, bronze round bars have properties which provide excellent reliability and suitability for highly stressful engineering services:
Bronze round bars can be found in many diameters for uses ranging from small and precise to large and structurally supporting or bearing parts.
| Diameter Range | Common Lengths | Grades Available | Finish |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 mm – 25 mm | 1 m / 3 m / 6 m | RG5, RG7, LG2 | As-cast / Machined |
| 30 mm – 100 mm | 1 m / 3 m / 6 m | RG5, RG7, RG12, LG2 | Turned / Ground |
| 110 mm – 250 mm | 1 m / 3 m | RG5, RG7, RG12, LG2 | As-cast / Turned |
| 260 mm – 500 mm | 0.5 m / 1 m | RG7, RG12 | As-cast |
| Custom Sizes | Per requirement | All grades | As specified |
The fact that RG7 and LG2 are both very good when working in seawater and brackish water environments means that they are the reliable choice when something needs to work without failure due to corrosion.
For shipyards and marine maintenance contractors operating in the UAE, the need for stocked bronze bars within the country is therefore a necessity.
In the oil and gas industry, there is a requirement for materials which are suitable for use under conditions of pressure, hydrocarbons present and chemically attacking environments.
Bronze round bars are useful in applications such as valve seats, pump bushes, bearing materials and also non-sparking hand tools in upstream, midstream and downstream applications.
The largest bronze round bar applications have been in the general industrial machinery sectors - lathes, presses, conveyors, mixers, compressors and virtually any type of machine tool.
Worm wheels, bearings, cam followers, spindle sleeves and guides in virtually every class of industrial machine are typically machined from bronze bars.
Moderate electrical conductivity, along with superior corrosion resistance, has made bronze desirable for electrical connectors, contact elements, terminal blocks, and grounding assemblies.
Its conductivity, combined with a wear and corrosion-resistant nature, which copper is unable to achieve alone, makes it ideal for switchgear, transformer fittings, and marine electrical systems.
Bronze round bars are used in automotive and aerospace industries as the material for finely machined bushes, rocker arm bearings, landing gear and hydraulic parts. They demand dimensional control, material traceability and good mechanical characteristics.
Phosphor and aluminium bronzes are also used where the demands for strength are higher (i.e., in Aerospace quality parts).
Bronze round bars in the construction sector help in structural fixings, architectural decorative fittings, expansion joints and specialised components for bridge structures, marine construction, etc.
The resistance of bronze to corrosion and its pleasant visual qualities make it an appropriate choice for components expected to withstand the effects of the environment.

Procurement teams and engineers prefer to go with bronze for many reasons:
For teams analysing the bronze round bar price UAE, it is driven by the below listed factors:
Prices can vary widely based on grade and size. Direct contact with a stocking bronze round bar supplier UAE is the best source for exact pricing.
For standard bearings and bushings, use RG5. Select RG7 for high loads and rough applications. For non-lubricated applications, RG12 is the correct choice. Select LG2 for valve bodies, marine fixtures and pressure fittings.
Verify that the tensile strength, hardness, and elongation of the grade meet application requirements. Don't assume a higher tin content always provides the best performance for every application.
For regulated sectors - oil/gas, marine, pressure equipment - specify barstock certified to appropriate standard (BS1400, ASTM B505, etc). Ask for mill test reports, and verify heat traceability before ordering.
Work out what the maximum and minimum diameters are that you need and the required lengths. Use a standard stock item where possible to minimise lead times. Confirm availability and lead time, and a custom length before proceeding with the specification.
Work with a supplier that carries the grades you are looking for, can certify the material and is experienced with industrial procurement. If your project is time-critical, working with a bronze rod supplier with a warehouse will reduce your import lead time.
